Clover mite

Systematic position. The clover mite (Bryobia praetiosa) is a member of the family Tetranychidae within the order Trombidiformes. As a common agricultural and garden pest, this species is widely recognized for its high mobility and ability to colonize a vast range of plants, often appearing in large numbers during spring and autumn seasons.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous feeder with a wide host range. It infests various fruit trees, including apples, pears, and plums, as well as berry bushes, clover, turf grasses, and ornamental flower bulbs. Its presence is often noted in lawns and gardens, from which it can migrate onto fruit crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the clover mite progresses through egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs primarily as eggs laid in crevices of tree bark, cracks in buildings, or under plant debris. Development depends heavily on weather conditions; the mite population increases rapidly during periods of moderate temperature and low humidity.

Damage and harmfulness. Clover mites feed by piercing plant cells and extracting the contents, including chlorophyll. This results in stippling, chlorosis, and general yellowing of the foliage. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop, reduced plant vigor, and significant yield losses in commercial orchards. In residential areas, they are often considered a nuisance pest due to their tendency to enter homes.

Protection measures. Effective management includes cultural practices such as removing grass and weeds near the foundations of trees or buildings, which acts as a barrier for migration. Maintaining healthy plant growth through proper irrigation is also beneficial. In cases of high infestation, the application of targeted acaricides is necessary to reduce mite numbers while ensuring the safety of beneficial predators in the garden ecosystem.
