The gooseberry mite (Bryobia ribis) is a destructive pest belonging to the spider mite family (Tetranychidae) within the order Trombidiformes. It is a significant concern for growers of small fruit crops, as its feeding activities can rapidly weaken healthy bushes.
This mite primarily infests gooseberries, as well as black and red currants. It is specialized to thrive on these hosts, often residing on the underside of leaves, which makes detection challenging during the early stages of a population outbreak.
The biological cycle of Bryobia ribis starts with eggs overwintering on the bark of stems. As temperatures rise in spring, larvae emerge and immediately target newly opening buds. The mites progress through several life stages, producing multiple generations throughout the growing season, which allows their population to build up quickly in warm, dry weather.
Feeding damage is characterized by fine stippling or bleaching of the leaf tissue. Over time, these spots coalesce, leading to necrotic areas, leaf chlorosis, and premature defoliation. Such physiological stress reduces the plant's ability to photosynthesize, directly impacting fruit yield and the development of next year's fruit buds.
