Buglossidium luteum, commonly referred to as the Solenette, is a small flatfish species belonging to the family Soleidae. While generally a natural component of marine ecosystems, it can act as a nuisance in aquaculture settings by competing for natural food resources within sea cages or pens, thus requiring attention from aquaculture management teams.

Systematically, this species belongs to the order Pleuronectiformes. It is a benthic fish that prefers soft, sandy, or muddy substrates. In the context of industrial-scale aquaculture, its presence can be problematic if it establishes populations within or near the containment systems of higher-value cultivated species.

The biological cycle of the Solenette involves a planktonic larval stage that eventually settles to the seafloor, undergoing a significant metamorphosis. Adults are typically sedentary, camouflaging themselves in the sediment. This behavior makes them highly efficient at utilizing localized food sources, which explains their success in colonizing various habitats.

The damage caused by this species is primarily indirect and relates to resource depletion. As a benthic carnivore, it competes with juvenile fish or shellfish for polychaetes and crustaceans. In enclosed or semi-enclosed farming environments, this competition can significantly impact the growth rates and biomass conversion efficiency of the target crop.
