Grape tube weevil

The grape tube weevil (scientific name: Byctiscus fausti) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Rhynchitidae. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets grapevines. Adult beetles are small, metallic-colored insects often displaying a brilliant green or copper luster. They are known for their distinct behavior of rolling leaves, which gives the species its common name.

The pest primarily affects grapevine plants. The damage is inflicted by both the adult beetles and the larvae. Adults feed on young buds, tender leaves, and developing flower clusters during the early stages of the growing season. This feeding activity significantly hinders the growth of the vine and drastically reduces the potential yield of the vineyard.

The life cycle of Byctiscus fausti is closely synchronized with the phenological development of the grape plant. Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under debris. As spring approaches and temperatures rise, they emerge to begin feeding. Females lay eggs inside tightly rolled leaves, which they craft into unique structures often called "cigars," providing a protected environment for the larvae to feed and develop.

Damage caused by the tube weevil is characterized by these rolled, drying leaves hanging from the vine. This process deprives the plant of necessary leaf surface for photosynthesis and can lead to severe stress on the vine. If left untreated, the accumulation of damaged shoots and leaves leads to significant aesthetic and physiological degradation of the crop.

Effective management strategies for this pest include:

• Deep cultivation of soil in vineyard rows to disrupt pupation sites.
• Manual removal and destruction of leaf "cigars" early in the season to prevent larval maturation.
