Grape weevil

Byctiscus lacunipennis

Description

The grape weevil (Byctiscus lacunipennis) is a member of the Attelabidae family within the order Coleoptera. This insect is a significant pest in viticulture, known for its distinct behavior of rolling leaves into cylindrical structures, which is why it is commonly referred to as a leaf-rolling weevil.

While the species predominantly affects grapevines, it is a polyphagous pest. It can also infest various fruit trees, including apple, pear, and plum, especially when those trees are located in close proximity to vineyards, serving as an alternative food source during the season.

The life cycle of the grape weevil begins with overwintering as adults in the soil or beneath leaf litter. Once spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge to feed on developing leaves. Females then perform the unique act of rolling leaves into tight "cigars" where they deposit eggs, providing the larvae with a protected environment for feeding and development.

The damage is highly visible as rolled leaves turn brown and eventually wither. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial leaf loss, which weakens the grapevine. This stress reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, impairs wood maturation, and negatively impacts both current yield and the long-term health of the vineyard.

  • Manual collection and destruction of rolled leaves.
  • Tillage and cultivation of the soil under vines to disrupt pupation.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the beetle emergence period.
  • Installation of sticky barriers on vine trunks to trap climbing adults.
  • Maintaining vine health through balanced fertilization and irrigation.

Effective management requires early detection in the spring when the beetles first appear. By combining cultural practices such as mechanical removal with timely chemical interventions when necessary, growers can successfully minimize population levels and protect their crop from significant damage.
