Description
The poplar leaf-rolling weevil (Byctiscus populi) is a notorious member of the Attelabidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. This beetle derives its common name from the female's specific behavior of rolling leaves into tight cigar-shaped structures, which serve as protection and food for the developing larvae.
The primary hosts of this pest are species within the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars and aspens. Occasionally, they may be found on birches or other deciduous trees. The weevil is widely distributed across Eurasian forest ecosystems and urban parks where its host trees thrive.
The biology of this species follows a one-year development cycle. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under leaf litter. In the spring, after emerging from their winter quarters, the adults engage in supplemental feeding. Mating occurs during the bud-burst stage, followed by the female creating the characteristic leaf rolls for oviposition.
The damage caused is twofold: adults feed on foliage, and the creation of rolls leads to premature leaf senescence and drop. Extensive infestation can significantly weaken the tree, stunt shoot growth, and severely impair the aesthetic value of ornamental plantations. In severe cases, significant defoliation may occur, stressing the host tree.
Effective management strategies for this pest include:
- Physical removal and disposal of fallen leaf rolls to eliminate the next generation of larvae.
- Application of appropriate systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of the adult beetles.
