Description

Systematic position. The clover looper moth (Caenurgina crassiuscula) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. Previously taxonomically associated with the Noctuidae family, this moth is well-known in North America for its distinctive larvae that display a looping movement, similar to inchworms. It is a common inhabitant of meadows, pastures, and agricultural fields.

Host crops. The pest primarily targets members of the Fabaceae (legume) family. Its preferred hosts include clover, alfalfa, and vetch. In years of outbreak, larvae can be highly destructive, moving from native pasture legumes to cultivated fodder crops. While legumes are the primary food source, the larvae are opportunistic and may occasionally consume other vegetation if necessary.

Biology and life cycle. Caenurgina crassiuscula undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults are diurnal, which is somewhat unusual for moths in this family. Females lay eggs directly on the leaves of host plants. The larvae develop through several instars, feeding voraciously. The species typically overwinters as a pupa, protected within a silken cocoon in the soil or among organic debris on the field surface, emerging as adults in late spring.

Damage and economic impact. The larvae are voracious leaf-feeders. Younger larvae initially skeletonize the leaves, but as they grow, they consume entire leaflets, leaving only the midribs. A heavy infestation can result in significant defoliation of forage crops, which drastically reduces the yield and nutritional value of hay or pasture, leading to substantial economic losses for farmers.

Control measures. Management of the clover looper requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Regular monitoring of fields to detect larval activity at early stages.
  • Timely harvesting of forage crops, which forces larvae to perish or prevents further feeding.
  • Maintenance of healthy soil and crop rotation to minimize overwintering success.
  • Biological control using microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis.
  • Selective chemical control, applied only when population thresholds are exceeded, ensuring minimal impact on beneficial insects.
