Description

Systematic position. The forage looper is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. Historically, it was classified within the family Noctuidae, but recent taxonomic updates place it in Erebidae. It is widely recognized as a significant foliage-feeding pest in North America.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets leguminous crops. Alfalfa is its preferred host, but it also readily feeds on clover, soybeans, beans, and various wild legumes. In agricultural landscapes, it can migrate across fields, causing localized but intense damage to fodder crops.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult moth. Adult moths are nocturnal and deposit eggs on the foliage of host plants. Larvae, known as loopers due to their characteristic movement, possess camouflage colors that match the stems of the plants they consume, making them difficult to spot.

Damage and economic significance. Larval feeding is the primary cause of damage. Young caterpillars feed on the lower leaf surface, while mature larvae consume the entire leaf, often leaving only the main veins. High infestation levels can lead to severe defoliation, significantly reducing the yield and nutritional value of hay crops.

Management and control. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Key strategies include:

  • Frequent monitoring of fields during the growing season.
  • Early harvesting of alfalfa to remove the food source and expose larvae to heat and predators.
  • Targeted application of biological or chemical insecticides when larval populations exceed economic thresholds.
