Calathus (Latin: Calathus) belongs to the family Carabidae, commonly known as ground beetles, within the order Coleoptera. While many carabids are beneficial predators, certain species within the Calathus genus exhibit phytophagous behavior, occasionally causing economic damage to agricultural crops. They are typically dark-colored, fast-moving beetles that are active during nocturnal hours.

The primary crops threatened by these beetles include various cereals such as winter wheat, barley, and rye, as well as maize. Damage is most significant when the beetle population peaks during the germination and seedling emergence stages. The insects exploit the soft tissues of young plants, which can lead to substantial stand loss if left unmanaged.

The biology of Calathus is closely linked to soil moisture and surface debris, which provide protection for both larvae and adults. Overwintering occurs primarily as adults or larvae within the soil profile or beneath plant residues. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, where larvae feed on organic matter or plant tissues, and adults emerge in early spring to continue their development.

Feeding damage is characterized by ragged holes in leaves and the destruction of the epidermis of young stalks. In later stages, adult beetles may target the developing kernels in the ears of cereal crops. The economic impact includes reduced yields, impaired plant growth, and the necessity for costly remedial actions to prevent further field degradation.
