Calathus fuscipes

Calathus fuscipes is a species of ground beetle belonging to the family Carabidae (order Coleoptera). While many ground beetles are beneficial predators, this particular species is known for its phytophagous habits, which can lead to significant damage in agricultural fields during the germination and seedling stages.

This beetle primarily affects cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and rye, but it is also known to feed on sugar beets and various vegetable crops. The adult beetles are particularly destructive to seeds and young seedlings as they emerge from the soil, consuming the vital tissues of the plant.

The life cycle involves overwintering either as adults or larvae within the soil profile. As spring temperatures rise, the beetles emerge to feed and reproduce.
