Sanderling

The Sanderling (Calidris alba) belongs to the order Charadriiformes and the family Scolopacidae. From an agronomic perspective, it is critical to distinguish between migratory shorebirds and true agricultural pests. The Sanderling is a specialized wading bird and does not pose a threat to agricultural crops under normal ecological conditions.

The biological cycle of the Sanderling is characterized by long-distance migrations between Arctic breeding grounds and tropical or temperate coastlines. Their diet consists almost exclusively of small marine invertebrates, crustaceans, and larvae. They possess neither the physiological adaptations nor the behavioral motivation to consume plant materials, such as grains, shoots, or fruits.

Regarding pest status, the Sanderling is not considered a pest in any farming system. There is no evidence of this bird causing damage to wheat, maize, or vegetable plantations. Reports of birds on agricultural land usually involve resting during long migratory flights or foraging for soil-dwelling insects in damp soil conditions, which does not constitute direct crop destruction.

The interaction between the Sanderling and crop fields is neutral. While their presence on farmland is rare, they might theoretically assist in controlling populations of soil-based insect larvae. However, due to their preference for coastal habitats, their role in biological pest control within agricultural settings is negligible and undocumented as a systematic benefit.

No crop protection measures are required against the Sanderling. As it is not an agricultural pest, attempts to mitigate its presence through chemical or physical deterrents are unnecessary and ecologically inappropriate. Agricultural management should focus on recognized threats, while recognizing the Sanderling as a non-damaging visitor to the rural landscape.
