Caliothrips fasciatus, commonly referred to as the bean thrips, belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that causes extensive damage to a wide range of horticultural and field crops by feeding on leaf tissues and reproductive structures.
The host range of this insect is remarkably broad, including economically important crops such as beans, cotton, citrus, lettuce, and tomatoes. Because it is highly adaptable, it can thrive in various agricultural environments, making it a persistent challenge for commercial growers and farmers worldwide.
The biology of the bean thrips involves several life stages: egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically inserted into plant tissues. The transition from larva to adult is rapid, and the insects are highly dependent on ambient temperatures, with warm and dry weather conditions significantly accelerating their reproductive rate and population growth.
Feeding damage occurs when adults and larvae pierce the surface cells of leaves and fruits, extracting the plant sap. This results in stippling, chlorosis, and silvery or bleached patches on the foliage. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop, stunted growth, and a reduction in crop yield quality. Additionally, their feeding activity can facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Implementing weed control to eliminate alternative hosts for the thrips.
- Utilizing yellow or blue sticky traps to monitor adult flight activity.
