Description
The Pear slug (Caliroa) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Tenthredinidae. Despite its common name, it affects a wide range of fruit trees, being particularly notorious for damaging cherry, pear, plum, and other Rosaceae species.
These insects are widespread and thrive in temperate climates. Their lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adult sawflies emerge in the spring, and females deposit their eggs into the leaf tissue, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.
The larvae are easily identified by their slimy, dark-colored appearance, which resembles small slugs or leeches. This mucous coating serves as a protective mechanism. They typically feed on the upper surface of the leaves, causing distinct visual damage during the summer months.
The harm caused by this pest is mainly through skeletonizing foliage. The larvae consume the leaf tissue while leaving the veins intact, which leads to browning, curling, and premature leaf drop. In severe infestations, the tree may experience complete defoliation, leading to significant stress and reduced fruit quality.
Effective management strategies include several key practices:
- Cultivating the soil around the base of trees to destroy pupating larvae.
- Removing and composting fallen foliage to reduce the overwintering population.
- Applying insecticidal soaps or horticultural oils during early infestation stages.
- Utilizing systemic or contact insecticides when larvae are actively feeding to prevent widespread damage.
