Calligrapha beetle

Calligrapha is a genus of beetles belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are easily recognized by their distinct, often intricate dark markings on a lighter base, which covers their elytra. Many species in this genus are known for their preference for specific host plants.

These beetles are primarily foliage feeders, targeting plants in families such as Malvaceae and Asteraceae. Certain species within the genus are known to infest ornamental shrubs and forest trees, including willows and alders, where they can become a significant pest problem if their populations reach high density during the growing season.

The biological cycle of the Calligrapha beetle follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in clusters on the undersides of leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding on the leaf tissue. After passing through several instars, they descend to the soil or debris to pupate before emerging as adults.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by the consumption of leaf tissue, often resulting in skeletonized leaves where only the vein structure remains. High levels of infestation cause significant stress to the host plants, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted development, premature defoliation, and decreased vigor, which is particularly detrimental to young or delicate crops.

• Hand-picking and mechanical removal of adults and larvae from small plants.
