Dogwood leaf beetle

The Dogwood leaf beetle (Calligrapha philadelphica) is a member of the beetle order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is primarily recognized as a specialized herbivore that targets various species within the Cornus genus, commonly known as dogwoods, primarily in North American ecosystems.

The primary host plants for this pest include ornamental and native dogwood trees and shrubs. Both the adult beetles and the larvae feed voraciously on the foliage. In nurseries or landscaped areas, significant infestations can cause rapid defoliation, which negatively impacts both the aesthetic appeal of the trees and their overall physiological health.

The life cycle of Calligrapha philadelphica typically consists of overwintering as adults in protected sites such as leaf litter or soil. As temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed on developing leaves and mate. Females deposit clusters of eggs on the foliage, and the emerging larvae begin feeding immediately, progressing through several instars before pupating.

The damage caused by these beetles is characterized by extensive leaf skeletonization or irregular holes across the leaf surface. As the larvae mature, they consume more plant tissue, which can lead to premature leaf drop. Severe or repeated defoliation events weaken the host plant, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and other secondary diseases or pests.
