The Jersey tiger (Callimorpha quadripunctaria) is a moth species of the family Erebidae. While often appreciated for its distinct, bright, and patterned wings, it acts as a generalist feeder in its larval stage, sometimes causing noticeable damage to specific agricultural and horticultural plants.
The larvae are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide range of host plants. They are frequently found attacking fruit trees and berry bushes, such as raspberries, blackberries, apple, and pear trees. They also utilize various herbaceous plants, including nettles and dead-nettles, as alternative food sources.
The life cycle of this species typically consists of one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the litter layer or under debris on the ground. Once spring temperatures rise, the caterpillars emerge and begin feeding voraciously. Pupation occurs in the summer within loose cocoons placed on leaves or in the topsoil, with adult moths appearing between July and September.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by defoliation. Younger larvae often skeletonize the leaf blades, while mature caterpillars consume the leaves entirely, leaving only the veins behind. Significant infestations can weaken plants, inhibit vegetative growth, and negatively impact the overall development and productivity of the infested crops.
Managing the Jersey tiger involves several cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping the orchard floor clean by removing leaf litter and debris effectively destroys overwintering sites. In cases where the caterpillar population reaches economic threshold levels, applying approved biological control agents or targeted insecticides during the early larval development stage is recommended for effective suppression.
