Systematic position: Calliphora augur is a species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. While widely recognized as a blowfly associated with decaying organic matter, its agricultural impact is significant in fruit-growing regions where it actively infests developing or ripening crops.

Affected crops: This pest primarily targets fleshy fruit crops, including stone fruits like peaches, plums, and apricots, as well as pome fruits such as apples and pears. Additionally, Calliphora augur can cause damage to tomato fruits, especially when the skin is compromised by mechanical injury or other pest activities.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle progresses through eggs, three larval instars, pupae, and adults. Female flies are attracted to the scent of ripening or rotting fruit. Eggs are laid directly into the tissue of the fruit. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the flesh, consuming it rapidly, before eventually dropping to the soil to pupate.

Nature of damage: The damage is characterized by internal tissue breakdown and accelerated decay. As larvae feed, they create extensive tunnels that lead to fluid leakage and the development of foul-smelling lesions. Infested fruits rapidly lose structural integrity, making them unmarketable and susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Control measures: Effective management of Calliphora augur focuses on sanitation to break the reproductive cycle. Reducing the availability of suitable breeding grounds is key. Recommended practices include:

• Frequent collection and disposal of fallen fruit (mummies).
• Use of attractant-baited traps to capture adult flies.
• Harvesting fruit promptly before they become overripe.
• Protecting sensitive crops with fine-mesh netting to prevent egg-laying.
