Bluebottle fly

The bluebottle fly (Calliphora quadrimaculata) is a member of the Calliphoridae family, commonly known for its metallic blue appearance. While primarily recognized as a decomposer in ecological systems, this fly can act as a secondary pest in agricultural settings, particularly when it targets ripening fruits that have already sustained minor damage or cracking.

Taxonomically, the species belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. These insects are well-adapted to varied environments and are capable of swift flight, allowing them to locate suitable resources for oviposition across large orchard areas. Their biology is intrinsically linked to the availability of decaying organic matter or ripe, susceptible fruit tissues.

Agricultural crops affected by this pest primarily include stone fruits and pome fruits, such as plums, peaches, apples, and pears. The flies are opportunistic; they usually colonize fruits that have been compromised by environmental factors, bird pecks, or other insect activity. Once the skin is broken, the fly rapidly utilizes the exposed flesh to support its larval development.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larvae are the primary damaging agents, feeding aggressively on the fruit tissue, which leads to rapid liquefaction and rot. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer climates significantly accelerating the maturation of each generation throughout the growing season.
