The Coffee leaf miner (Callisto coffeella) is a significant moth pest belonging to the family Gracillariidae. Known for its destructive potential in coffee-producing regions, this insect specifically targets the foliage of coffee trees. The adult moth is small and often goes unnoticed, making the larval stage the most critical period to monitor for crop damage management.

The host range is primarily focused on the genus Coffea. By feeding exclusively on the interior tissues of the leaves, the larvae bypass the plant's surface defenses. This infestation is particularly damaging to Arabica coffee plantations, where the health of the canopy is vital for the physiological development of the cherries and the overall vigor of the plant.

The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are deposited on the leaf surface, and upon hatching, the larva bores directly into the mesophyll. This internal feeding creates the characteristic "mines" that give the pest its name. After reaching maturity, the larva pupates within a protected area of the leaf, often folding the margin for shelter.

The pest's impact is characterized by the presence of irregular, brownish patches or tunnels on the foliage, which eventually lead to necrotic tissue. Heavy infestations result in severe leaf drop, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity. Consequently, the coffee tree experiences significant stress, leading to diminished fruit size, poor quality, and reduced yields over the harvest season.
