Horsfield's Tussock Moth

Horsfield's Tussock Moth (Calliteara horsfieldii) is a moth species belonging to the Erebidae family, specifically the Lymantriinae subfamily. Known as a significant defoliator, this insect is recognized as a pest in various agricultural and forestry settings across its native and expanded distribution range.

The host range of this species is extensive, covering many fruit and forest trees. It particularly targets species such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various tropical and hardwood trees. Because the larvae are polyphagous, they can adapt to different environmental conditions, making them a recurring problem for orchard management and nursery plantations.

The biology of Calliteara horsfieldii follows a complete metamorphosis cycle. The larvae are notably hairy, which serves as a defensive mechanism against predators. The life cycle involves several larval stages, followed by pupation in a silk-spun cocoon. These cocoons are often found hidden in tree crevices or wrapped in leaves, providing protection for the pupae during the transformation stage.

The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars, which consume foliage at an accelerated rate. Severe infestations result in mass defoliation, which severely stresses the host trees. This loss of foliage inhibits the tree's ability to produce energy through photosynthesis, leads to reduced vigor, and can significantly decrease fruit production or increase susceptibility to secondary pests and diseases.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Regular orchard inspections are crucial for early detection. Biological control using predators or microbial insecticides is often preferred to minimize environmental impact. If chemical intervention is necessary, targeted spraying during the early larval instar stages is most effective to curb population explosions before extensive damage occurs.
