Pale tussock moth

Calliteara pudibunda

Description

The Pale tussock moth (Calliteara pudibunda) is a member of the Erebidae family (formerly Lymantriidae), widely recognized as a significant defoliating pest in both forestry and commercial orchards. It is prevalent across Europe and parts of Asia, capable of causing localized but severe damage to foliage.

This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of deciduous trees. Its preferred hosts include apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees, as well as forest trees like oak, beech, and birch. High infestations can result in significant yield loss in fruit crops due to the loss of photosynthetic surface area.

The life cycle involves one generation per year. The species overwinters in the pupal stage, protected by a cocoon nestled in leaf litter or bark crevices. Adult moths emerge in late spring. Females lay eggs on the bark, and larvae emerge in summer, feeding voraciously on leaves until autumn when they reach maturity and pupate.

Larval damage manifests as extensive leaf defoliation. In severe cases, the caterpillars strip the tree of its leaves, leaving only midribs and petioles. The caterpillars are easily identifiable by their dense, colorful tufts of hairs and a distinctive, long, reddish-orange hair tuft on their tail end.

Effective management requires integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Cultural practices, such as removing leaf litter and scraping bark, help reduce overwintering populations. Chemical control should be implemented during the early larval stages when the insects are most susceptible to contact insecticides.

  • Monitoring for egg batches during the spring season.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps and birds.
  • Applying bio-insecticides during the early instar stages.
  • Using pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity.
