Taxonomic position. Calodromius spilotus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae (ground beetles). Unlike the majority of ground-dwelling carabids, this species is uniquely adapted to an arboreal lifestyle, frequently inhabiting the canopies and bark of various trees and woody shrubs.

Host plants and damage. This pest primarily targets fruit orchards and ornamental trees. While generally predatory, Calodromius spilotus can cause damage to plant tissues when its population density spikes. The injury is typically localized to the bark or the epidermis of developing fruit, where the beetles feed or congregate, creating entry points for secondary plant pathogens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is synchronized with the phenology of woody plants. Adult beetles typically overwinter in sheltered locations, such as under tree bark, in wood crevices, or within dense plant debris. With the onset of spring, they emerge, migrate to the upper branches, and initiate mating cycles, often producing one generation per year depending on climatic conditions.

Economic significance. The economic impact is often indirect, as the beetles act as potential vectors for fungal diseases through the microscopic wounds they cause on bark. High populations may weaken younger trees or nursery stock, necessitating monitoring and, if required, targeted intervention to prevent long-term damage to the plant's health and productivity.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical interventions when thresholds are exceeded:

• Manual removal of loose bark and dead wood to destroy overwintering sites.
• Installation of sticky or pheromone-based traps to monitor and reduce local beetle populations.
• Targeted application of insecticides during the early spring emergence phase.
• Promotion of natural biodiversity within the orchard to encourage predatory bird and insect populations.
