Ash leafroller moth

Systematic position. The ash leafroller moth (Caloptilia cuculipennella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. As a micro-moth, it is known for its specialized larval development, which progresses from leaf mining to leaf rolling, posing a unique challenge for plant protection.

Host plants. This pest primarily targets ash trees (Fraxinus species). It is frequently observed in forest ecosystems, urban landscaping, and commercial nurseries, where it can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to healthy specimens of various ages.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters as a pupa within a silken cocoon hidden in leaf litter or bark crevices. In spring, adults emerge and oviposit on the underside of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae initially feed as leaf miners, creating narrow tunnels, but later stages emerge from the mines to roll or fold the leaf edges, creating protective shelters for feeding.

Damage and impact. The primary sign of infestation is the presence of rolled or conical-shaped leaves held together by silk webbing. Inside these structures, larvae consume the leaf tissue. Widespread outbreaks can lead to extensive defoliation, severely stressing the tree, reducing its growth rate, and making it susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stressors.

Control measures. Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical treatments. Key strategies include:

• Physical removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate overwintering pupae.
• Application of systemic insecticides at the onset of larval emergence from mines to disrupt the rolling process.
• Monitoring of flight periods to ensure optimal timing for biological or chemical interventions.
