Description

The lilac leafminer (Caloptilia syringella) is a member of the Gracillariidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This small moth species is widely recognized as a significant pest affecting various ornamental shrubs and trees in gardens and landscapes.

The primary host plants for this moth include common lilac, privet, ash, and forsythia. When infestations are severe, the feeding activity of the larvae can cause substantial aesthetic damage and reduce the overall vigor of the host plant.

The lifecycle of the lilac leafminer consists of two or three generations per year, depending on local climate conditions. The insect overwinters as pupae in cocoons located in the soil or within leaf litter beneath the host plants. Adults emerge in spring to lay eggs on the underside of young leaves.

Larval damage begins with internal leaf mining, which appears as discolored blotches. As larvae mature, they emerge to roll or fold the leaves into tubes or clusters using silk webbing. They then consume the leaf tissue, causing it to skeletonize and eventually turn brown and wither.
