The tea leaf roller (Caloptilia theivora) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gracillariidae. This species is highly specialized, primarily affecting commercial tea plantations and posing a constant threat to tea production efficiency in various regions.
The primary host plant for this insect is the tea bush (Camellia sinensis). The pest targets young leaves and shoots, which are essential for the production of high-quality tea. Due to its host specificity, the insect can cause severe economic losses if not managed appropriately within plantation environments.
The life cycle of the tea leaf roller consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs on the underside of young tea leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae create mines within the leaf tissue, later progressing to rolling the leaves into conical shapes and securing them with silk webbing to feed inside.
The damage caused by the larvae involves skeletonizing the leaf tissue from within the rolled structures. This feeding behavior leads to leaf deformation, necrosis, and premature shedding. Heavy infestations result in reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted plant growth, and a significant decrease in the overall tea yield and quality.
