Blood-Vein moth

The Blood-Vein moth (Calothysanis amata), formerly known as Timandra comae, is a moth of the family Geometridae. This species is widely distributed across the Palearctic region, including Europe and parts of Asia. While it is not usually considered a primary agricultural threat, the larval stage (caterpillars) can cause significant cosmetic and physiological damage to specific herbaceous plants.

The primary hosts for the larvae of this species are plants within the Polygonaceae family. In agricultural settings, it is most frequently encountered on sorrel (Rumex) and rhubarb (Rheum). The adults are nocturnal and feed on nectar, but the larvae are strictly foliage consumers, making them the target for pest management efforts.

The life cycle typically consists of two generations per year. The larvae overwinter in the litter layer or near the roots of host plants. As temperatures rise in spring, they resume feeding, grow rapidly, and pupate within a silk cocoon spun among leaves. Adult moths emerge in late spring or summer, ready to lay eggs on the host plant foliage.

The damage caused by Calothysanis amata includes skeletonizing and irregular holes in the leaves. Caterpillars are often camouflaged and feed from the underside of the leaves, making detection difficult during early stages. High-density infestations can cause substantial yield losses for market gardeners growing sorrel, as damaged leaves are often unsuitable for commercial sale.

Effective management strategies for this pest include:

• Regular removal of host weeds like wild docks from the garden area to break the life cycle.
• Cultivation of soil in the autumn to expose overwintering larvae to predators and environmental stress.
• Application of microbial insecticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against lepidopteran larvae.
