Campaea margaritata
Campaea
Description
Campaea margaritata, commonly known as the Light Emerald, is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Geometridae. While often seen as a common woodland species, its larval stage can occasionally reach high densities, leading to significant defoliation of various deciduous tree species.
The adult moth is characterized by its pale, translucent green wings with two fine, white transverse lines. The larvae, typical of geometer moths, possess a unique crawling behavior and remarkable camouflage, allowing them to mimic the appearance of small twigs, which serves as a highly effective defense mechanism against avian predators.
This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. Preferred hosts include Oak (Quercus), Birch (Betula), Alder (Alnus), and occasionally various species within the Rosaceae family, making them potential pests in mixed orchards and ornamental garden settings.
The life cycle typically involves two generations per year. Larvae of the late summer brood are responsible for overwintering, seeking refuge in bark crevices or among leaf litter. Once spring arrives, these larvae resume feeding on emerging buds and fresh foliage, causing early-season damage that can hinder the development of the host tree.
The primary concern for growers is the defoliation caused by larvae, which can lead to reduced photosynthetic capacity and overall tree stress. Management and control strategies include:
- Regular monitoring of canopy density and leaf damage during the early spring season.
- Deployment of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps that target Geometridae larvae.
- Application of Bacillus thuringiensis sprays for targeted control without broad-spectrum toxicity.
- Cultural practices like cleaning debris around the base of trees to reduce overwintering sites.
- Use of sticky bands on tree trunks during early spring to prevent young larvae from ascending into the canopy.
