Golden-spotted ground beetle
Campalita auropunctatum
Description
The Golden-spotted ground beetle (Campalita auropunctatum) belongs to the Carabidae family within the order Coleoptera. While primarily recognized as a beneficial predatory beetle that feeds on moth larvae, this species can exhibit occasional phytophagous behavior, causing significant damage to agricultural crops when prey populations are low.
This beetle primarily affects various cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and corn, as well as sugar beets. The damage is most critical during the germination stage and the development of the first true leaves. In instances of mass outbreaks, the beetles can cause severe thinning of stands, particularly in drought-stricken areas where traditional insect prey is scarce.
The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under debris, emerging in early spring to mate and lay eggs. The larvae are also predatory but can cause incidental damage to sprouting seeds and seedlings while searching for food in the upper layers of the soil.
Damage symptoms typically include shredded leaves, gnawed stems, and consumed seedlings. Because the beetle is traditionally considered an entomophage, its status as a pest is usually situational. However, during favorable climatic conditions for the beetle's reproduction, the pressure on young crops can become intense, leading to substantial economic losses for the farmer.
Pest management relies heavily on cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Deep autumn plowing is the most effective method to disturb the overwintering sites of the beetles. Chemical control using insecticides should only be considered when the economic threshold is exceeded, as indiscriminate use may eliminate the beneficial predatory functions this beetle provides to the agroecosystem.
- Implementation of deep autumn tillage.
- Regular field monitoring for beetle density.
- Use of authorized insecticides during high-density infestations.
- Crop rotation to manage soil-dwelling pest populations.
