Description
Campanulotes bidentatus, commonly known as the pigeon louse, is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. This small insect lives its entire life cycle on the host, feeding on skin debris, feather barbs, and secretions, making it a permanent parasite.
The primary hosts for this pest are members of the Columbidae family, including wild pigeons and various breeds kept in domestic or ornamental aviaries. The parasite is highly host-specific and rarely transitions to other bird species, concentrating its impact on pigeon populations.
The biological development follows a hemimetabolous cycle, occurring directly on the bird's body. The female glues eggs to the base of the feathers. After hatching, nymphs undergo several molts before reaching adulthood. The cycle is relatively rapid, which allows for heavy infestations to develop within a few weeks if left unchecked.
Infestation causes significant discomfort, leading to excessive preening, feather breakage, and skin irritation. Heavy parasite loads lead to poor plumage condition, restlessness, and weight loss. In severe cases, the weakened immune system of the birds makes them more susceptible to other secondary avian diseases.
Control strategies require a combination of direct chemical treatment and environmental management. Safe insecticides in powder or spray forms are typically applied to the birds, while regular cleaning and disinfection of lofts are essential to eliminate environmental eggs or stray lice. Providing sand or dust baths is a highly recommended natural preventative measure for bird hygiene.
