These insects are specialized phytophages characterized by distinct, often leaf-like expansions on their hind tibiae in adults, a key morphological trait that assists agronomists in the accurate identification of this genus during field inspections.

This pest exhibits feeding activity on a variety of herbaceous plants. Its primary economic impact is felt on legumes, including forage grasses and specific vegetable crops. In certain environments, wild plants belonging to the Fabaceae and Asteraceae families can also host populations of this insect, acting as reservoirs between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of Camptopus consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults, following a process of incomplete metamorphosis. Overwintering typically occurs at the adult stage within leaf litter, plant debris, or under protective bark. As temperatures rise in the spring, the insects migrate to host plants, initiating active feeding and subsequent egg-laying cycles.

Nature of damage and economic impact
Damage is caused by the insects piercing plant tissues with their proboscis to extract cell sap from both generative and vegetative organs. These punctures often result in the deformation of young shoots, bud drop, and a significant decrease in the quality and quantity of seed yields. During high infestation years, the cumulative stress on plants can lead to severe crop failure, especially under water-stressed conditions.
