Description
The rice bug (Leptocorisa corbetti) is a member of the family Alydidae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of rice crops, particularly in South and Southeast Asia, where it poses a constant threat to food security and agricultural productivity.
The pest primarily targets rice (Oryza sativa) but can also infest other graminaceous plants including sorghum and millet. The adults and nymphs prefer to congregate on the panicles of the host plant, where they feed on the sap of the developing grain during the milk stage.
The life cycle of the rice bug consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Eggs are laid in clusters on the leaves of plants. Nymphs pass through five instars before reaching adulthood. The rapid reproduction rate allows the population to grow significantly during the heading and grain-filling stages of the rice plant.
Damage occurs when the insect pierces the glumes of the rice spikelet to extract nutrients from the developing grain. This process results in empty, discolored, or malformed grains, often referred to as "chaffy" grains. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial yield losses, sometimes reaching 20-40% if not managed effectively.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:
