Gold-netted ground beetle

The Gold-netted ground beetle (Carabus auronitens) is a species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. While generally known as predatory beneficial insects, their feeding habits can shift under specific environmental conditions, potentially leading to occasional damage to agricultural crops when their primary insect prey is scarce.

These beetles are primarily found in woodland and forest-steppe ecosystems. They can impact a variety of plants, including grain crops and vegetable seedlings. The primary risk occurs during the initial stages of crop development, as the beetles may target germinating seeds and young stems to supplement their diet with plant-based moisture or nutrients.

In the spring, they emerge, mate, and deposit eggs in the soil. Larvae develop underground, and while they predominantly hunt invertebrates, they can occasionally damage the subterranean parts of young crops if population densities are high.

Damage symptoms include irregular gnawing on the stems near the soil surface and the destruction of delicate seedlings. This leads to weakened plant vitality, stunt growth, and potential crop failure in localized areas. While not categorized as a primary pest, their density monitoring is essential in areas where integrated pest management practices are employed.
