Wood ground beetle

Systematic position: The wood ground beetle (Carabus nemoralis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Carabidae. While the majority of ground beetles are known as beneficial predators, this specific species can exhibit phytophagous behavior, occasionally causing economic damage in agricultural landscapes.

Target crops and damage: This pest primarily threatens cereals, various vegetable crops, and berries. Both larvae and adult beetles cause damage by gnawing on young sprouts, destroying growth points, and consuming seeds directly in the soil. High populations of this pest can lead to significant stand depletion, resulting in uneven crop growth and reduced harvest yields.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Carabus nemoralis consists of a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. These beetles are primarily nocturnal, preferring moist and shaded environments.
