Carineta

Description

Carineta is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cicadidae, within the order Hemiptera. Primarily found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, these insects are known as specialized plant feeders. While often studied from an entomological perspective, they can function as significant pests when their populations reach densities that threaten agricultural stability in woody perennial crops.

The biology of Carineta revolves around a life cycle that includes a prolonged nymphal stage spent underground. During this phase, the nymphs feed on the xylem fluid of plant roots. After several years of development, the nymphs emerge as adults. This cryptic subterranean life makes it difficult to detect infestations until significant damage to the host plant's root system has already occurred, often leading to reduced plant vigor.

These insects affect a variety of woody plants, including coffee trees, fruit orchards, and ornamental trees. The primary damage is caused by both nymphs and adults. Nymphs cause physiological stress by extracting nutrients from roots, while adults damage the shoots through piercing-sucking feeding and the mechanical impact of oviposition. This feeding behavior weakens the plant structure and disrupts normal physiological functions.

In terms of agricultural impact, infestations result in stunted growth, yellowing of foliage, and in severe cases, branch dieback. The oviposition process causes physical scarring of the twigs, which often creates entry points for fungal pathogens and bacterial infections. This double-threat approach—direct sap loss combined with increased susceptibility to plant diseases—makes them a notable concern for orchard management.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest control. Effective mitigation involves regular scouting for adult activity, particularly during peak emergence periods. The use of systemic insecticides may be necessary in high-density areas, applied judiciously to minimize impact on beneficial insects. Furthermore, maintaining soil health and providing adequate irrigation helps trees withstand the stress of root feeding, ensuring long-term crop resilience.
