Roesel's scud

Roesel's scud (Latin: Carinogammarus roeselii) is a crustacean species belonging to the order Amphipoda and the family Gammaridae. While primarily known as an inhabitant of freshwater ecosystems, it has been identified as a significant pest in specific agricultural contexts, particularly within submerged rice paddies where it can disrupt plant development.

The primary crops affected by this organism are rice paddies. In these flooded environments, the high density of scuds can lead to extensive mechanical damage to newly sprouted rice seeds, roots, and tender stems. This interference at the early growth stages can significantly stunt plant development and reduce the overall crop stand density.

The biology of Carinogammarus roeselii is highly adapted to aquatic conditions, allowing for rapid reproduction in stagnant or slow-moving water. Their life cycle is characterized by direct development without a larval stage, allowing the population to increase quickly when conditions such as nutrient-rich water and submerged plant debris are abundant in the paddies.

The damage caused by these crustaceans is often manifested as surface erosion and biting of plant tissues. This feeding behavior weakens the structural integrity of the seedlings, making them more susceptible to subsequent disease or environmental stress. High concentrations of the scud in a small area can lead to visible patches of damaged crop that significantly decrease expected yields.
