Description

Gammarus pseudolimnaeus is a species of freshwater amphipod belonging to the Gammaridae family. While common in wild streams and ponds, it can become a problematic pest in controlled agricultural environments, particularly in hydroponic systems, aquaponics, and greenhouses where plants are grown in water or moisture-rich substrates.

This species primarily targets young plants with delicate root systems and tender stems. In nursery operations or intensive vegetable production using nutrient film techniques (NFT) or deep water culture (DWC), these crustaceans can cause significant stress to young seedlings by grazing on their roots, which hinders nutrient uptake and overall development.

The biology of these amphipods is characterized by a direct life cycle where eggs develop into juveniles within the female’s brood pouch. These offspring are fully formed when they emerge. Given favorable water temperatures in heated greenhouse facilities, these pests can reproduce continuously, leading to rapid population surges that overwhelm standard sanitation efforts.

The damage caused by Gammarus pseudolimnaeus is both mechanical and pathological. By feeding on root tissues, they strip away the protective epidermis. This damage creates entry points for waterborne fungi and bacteria, leading to root rot and systemic plant infections that can eventually result in total crop failure if left unchecked.

Effective management strategies focus on exclusion and environmental modification. Key steps include:

  • Installing fine mesh screens (micronic filters) on water intake pipes.
  • Maintaining strict sanitation by removing organic debris and sediment from reservoirs.
  • Regularly flushing water systems to prevent the buildup of detritus.
  • Ensuring that water source reservoirs are free from potential infestations.
