White birch gelechiid

Carpatolechia alburnella, often referred to as the white birch gelechiid, belongs to the family Gelechiidae within the order Lepidoptera. This small moth species is specifically adapted to feed on deciduous trees, with birch (Betula) species serving as its primary host plant.

The pest is primarily encountered in boreal and temperate forest regions. While individual trees might tolerate minor infestations, high populations of Carpatolechia alburnella can result in widespread defoliation, which negatively impacts tree health and aesthetic value in landscape design and forestry.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are generally nocturnal. The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage; upon hatching, they penetrate the leaf tissue, creating mines or rolling the leaves together using silk webbing to create protective enclosures for feeding.

Damage symptoms are characterized by blotch mines and leaf rolling. As the larvae consume the green parenchyma tissue, the affected areas turn brown and necrotic. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, which reduces the tree's overall vigor and can predispose the host to opportunistic diseases or environmental stress.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices include the removal and destruction of leaf litter, which often harbors overwintering pupae. Chemical control using systemic insecticides or microbial pesticides can be employed during the early stages of larval development to minimize damage to the foliage.
