Carpophilus gaveni

Carpophilus gaveni

Description

Carpophilus gaveni is a beetle species belonging to the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles. This pest is a significant threat to agriculture, particularly in orchards where it targets ripening fruits. Unlike some other Nitidulidae, this species shows a strong preference for healthy or slightly damaged fruit on the trees, making it a difficult pest to manage.

The host range of this pest is diverse, affecting various stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, apricots, and plums. It is also known to infest citrus, figs, and other fleshy fruits. In many regions, the beetle has become a primary concern for growers because it feeds on high-value fruit, leading to substantial economic losses during harvest season.

The biology of Carpophilus gaveni is characterized by high reproductive rates and rapid development. Adults are strong flyers and are attracted to the fermentation odors emitted by ripening or damaged fruits. Females oviposit within the fruit tissue, and larvae complete their development inside the fruit, causing extensive internal tunneling and destruction of the pulp.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct feeding damage and indirect secondary infection. As the larvae tunnel through the fruit, they facilitate the entry of rot-inducing fungi, such as Monilinia species. This interaction accelerates fruit decay, making the produce unsellable and often causing the entire harvest to be rejected due to contamination and poor quality.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Carpophilus gaveni. The following strategies are recommended for commercial orchards:

  • Strict orchard sanitation by removing and destroying fallen or damaged fruit.
  • Using pheromone-based traps for population monitoring and mass trapping.
  • Applying insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded and during periods of low activity for beneficial insects.
  • Managing harvest timing to reduce the duration fruits are exposed to potential infestations.
