Dusky sap beetle

Carpophilus lugubris

Description

Systematic position. Carpophilus lugubris belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae, commonly known as sap beetles. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest worldwide, particularly in regions where intensive corn cultivation is practiced.

Host plants. The primary host for this pest is corn (maize), specifically sweet corn and field corn. Beetles are attracted to the silks and the developing ears. However, Carpophilus lugubris is a polyphagous pest and can be found on a variety of damaged or fermenting fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, strawberries, stone fruits, and melons.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs near the host tissue. Larvae are the primary feeding stage, causing damage as they tunnel through the kernels of the corn ear. Pupation generally occurs in the soil beneath the host plant. The number of generations per year depends heavily on climatic conditions and temperature.

Damage and economic impact. The dusky sap beetle causes both direct and indirect damage. Direct feeding leads to grain loss and reduced yield quality. Indirectly, the beetles introduce fungal spores into the ears, facilitating the development of ear rot diseases. This often results in the production of mycotoxins, significantly degrading the market value and safety of the harvested grain.

  • Maintain rigorous field sanitation by removing post-harvest residues.
  • Plant corn varieties with tight husks that offer physical resistance to beetle entry.
  • Use pheromone-based traps to monitor populations and guide insecticide application timing.
  • Employ biological controls, including beneficial predatory insects and nematodes.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions for harvested grain to prevent post-harvest infestations.
