Dried fruit beetle

Systematic position: The dried fruit beetle (Carpophilus niger) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Nitidulidae. These insects are well-known opportunistic pests that primarily infest ripening, damaged, or decaying fruits and vegetables, causing significant post-harvest and pre-harvest losses.

Host crops: This species is a polyphagous insect with a wide host range. It commonly infests stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, plums, and apricots, as well as pome fruits and strawberries. Furthermore, it is a frequent pest of stored products, including dried fruits, corn on the cob, and various canned or damaged vegetable crops.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in fruit cracks or feeding sites. The development rate is highly dependent on temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the life cycle. In favorable environments, multiple generations can occur throughout the growing season, rapidly increasing the pest population.

Nature of damage: Both larvae and adults feed on the fruit flesh, creating tunnels that often lead to total decay. Their presence usually promotes the secondary infection of fruits by fungi and bacteria, which rapidly breakdown the tissue. This damage is particularly devastating as it often turns marketable produce into waste within a very short period of time.

Control measures: Management requires strict sanitation practices in the orchard and storage facilities. Key strategies include:

• Prompt removal and destruction of fallen or infested fruit.
• Harvesting fruit promptly to avoid over-ripening.
• Using pheromone traps for monitoring populations.
• Maintaining cold chain temperatures in storage areas.
• Applying selective insecticides only when thresholds are exceeded.
