Red Underwing

The Red Underwing (Latin: Catocala nupta) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Erebidae. This species is easily recognized by its forewings, which mimic the texture and color of tree bark, providing excellent camouflage, while the hindwings are a vivid red with black bands, a feature used to startle potential predators when the moth takes flight.

The larvae, or caterpillars, feed on a variety of broad-leaved trees. In orchard environments, they are known to damage fruit-bearing species such as apples, pears, and plums. They also frequent willows and poplars, which often serve as primary host plants that contribute to the buildup of pest populations near agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern. The species overwinters in the egg stage, with females depositing their eggs into the deep crevices of tree bark. During the spring, larvae emerge and begin feeding on new foliage. They progress through several larval instars, growing significantly before pupating in protected areas such as folded leaves or bark fissures.

The primary damage is caused by the caterpillars consuming leaves, which can lead to severe defoliation if left unchecked. Because they are nocturnal feeders and hide during the day, damage often goes unnoticed until significant leaf loss has occurred. Such damage weakens the tree, reduces its ability to synthesize energy, and subsequently impacts overall yield and plant vigor.
