Description

Systematic position. Catopsilia thauruma is a butterfly species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pieridae. This species is native to specific island regions, where its larval stage has adapted to consume foliage of various plant species, functioning as a localized agricultural and forest pest.

Affected crops. The larvae primarily feed on various species of the family Fabaceae. The most common host plants are within the genus Cassia. In affected areas, this pest often targets ornamental trees, shade trees in urban settings, and leguminous plants grown for forestry or horticultural purposes.

Biology and life cycle. Like all butterflies, Catopsilia thauruma undergoes complete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female lays eggs on the underside of host plant leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several instars, consuming large amounts of foliage before creating a chrysalis on the host plant branches.

Damage and harmfulness. The larvae cause significant defoliation of the host plants. By consuming leaf tissue, they reduce the surface area available for photosynthesis. Heavy infestations result in severe canopy thinning, leading to reduced growth, susceptibility to secondary diseases, and the potential for total loss of ornamental value in landscaping projects.
