Description

The maple petiole borer (Caulocampus acericaulis) is a member of the family Tenthredinidae within the order Hymenoptera. This specific insect pest focuses its damage on maple trees, particularly targeting the stems or petioles of the leaves, which causes significant concern for arborists and forest managers.

The life cycle begins in early spring, synchronized with the bud break of host trees. The adult female uses her saw-like ovipositor to insert eggs into the base of the maple leaf petiole. This precise biological adaptation ensures that the larvae have immediate access to plant tissues upon hatching.

Once hatched, the larvae bore into the interior of the petiole and feed on the internal tissues. This feeding disrupts the transport of water and nutrients to the leaf blade. As a result, the leaves begin to wilt, change color to yellow prematurely, and eventually drop from the tree in early to mid-summer.

While the maple petiole borer does not typically kill a mature, healthy tree, the cumulative impact of leaf loss can weaken the plant's overall vigor. In young landscapes or high-value urban settings, the aesthetic damage caused by the premature shedding of leaves is often considered a serious problem that requires intervention.
