Description
The Sakhalin spruce web-spinning sawfly (Cephalcia sachalinensis) is a significant defoliating pest belonging to the family Pamphilidae. This insect is primarily known for causing economic and ecological damage to spruce forests in the Far Eastern regions, where it impacts the health and growth of coniferous stands.
The primary host for this species is the spruce tree, specifically the Jezo spruce. The larvae cause damage by feeding on the needles, constructing distinct silk-web nests around the twigs. These webs serve as critical protection from predators and environmental stressors during the larvae's feeding and development stage.
Its biological cycle is generally univoltine, meaning it produces one generation per year, although some individuals may undergo extended diapause in the soil. After overwintering as larvae deep in the soil profile, they pupate in the spring. Adult insects emerge to mate and lay eggs, starting a new cycle that poses a threat to forest density.
Damage occurs due to heavy defoliation, which severely stresses the trees. The loss of needles weakens the photosynthetic capacity of the spruce, leading to stunted growth, dieback of the crown, and increased susceptibility to secondary infestation by bark beetles and wood-boring insects, which often cause tree mortality.
