Wheat stem sawfly

Systematic position: The wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus) belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Cephidae. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that completes its entire larval development cycle within the stems of host plants, remaining protected from external environmental factors.

Crops damaged: This pest primarily attacks wheat (both winter and spring varieties), barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated grains, the sawfly successfully reproduces on various perennial grasses, such as wheatgrass and brome, which often serve as a reservoir for the pest in agricultural landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: Adults emerge in the spring, typically coinciding with the heading stage of wheat. Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the stem tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the stem, feeding on the inner parenchyma. As the plant matures, the larva moves toward the base, creates an overwintering chamber, and remains there in the stubble until the following spring.

Character of damage and harm: The most significant damage occurs when the larva severs the vascular bundles of the stem, often causing the plant to lodge (fall over) before harvest. This makes mechanical harvesting difficult and leads to direct yield losses. Furthermore, the disruption of nutrient flow results in poorly filled grains, significantly reducing both yield quantity and quality.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling the wheat stem sawfly. Key practices include deep plowing to bury the overwintering larvae, planting solid-stemmed wheat varieties that are physically resistant to larval boring, and using appropriate crop rotation. Chemical control is limited, as insecticides must be applied precisely during the brief adult flight period before egg-laying occurs.
