Description

Systematic position. The genus Ceratothrips belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These insects are small, slender, and possess characteristic fringed wings. Their piercing-sucking mouthparts are perfectly adapted for damaging plant tissues by extracting sap from epidermal cells, which triggers significant physiological stress in the host plant.

Affected crops. This pest has a broad host range, attacking various ornamental, vegetable, and field crops. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where year-round production provides constant food sources. Many weeds also act as alternative hosts, allowing the population to persist throughout the growing season and beyond.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves several distinct stages: egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult. Some stages are completed on the plant foliage, while others may occur in the soil or in sheltered crevices. Temperature plays a critical role in their development, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the generation time, leading to rapid population explosions.

Damage and harmfulness. Feeding damage is manifested as silvering or chlorotic streaking on leaves and flowers. Heavy infestations result in deformed growth, stunted plants, and poor flower development. Furthermore, these pests are known vectors for various plant viruses, causing widespread infection that can ruin entire batches of commercial crops if not managed in a timely manner.

Control measures. A successful integrated pest management (IPM) program is essential for controlling this pest. Relying on a single method is often insufficient due to the insect's high reproductive rate and hidden behavior.
