Brown-horned treehopper

The brown-horned treehopper (Ceresa brunnicornis) is a member of the Membracidae family within the Hemiptera order. This insect is distinguished by the unique horn-like shape of its pronotum. Its coloration, ranging from brown to greenish-brown, acts as effective camouflage, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the bark and foliage of host plants, which makes visual detection difficult.

As a notable pest, this treehopper targets a variety of perennial crops. It is particularly damaging to fruit trees such as apples, pears, peaches, and plums, and is frequently found in vineyards. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing plant tissues and extracting sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and disrupts its normal physiological functions.

The biology of Ceresa brunnicornis is centered around its egg-laying strategy. Overwintering occurs primarily in the egg stage, which the female embeds directly into the plant tissue under the bark of young twigs. After hatching in the spring, the nymphs undergo several instars, feeding on nearby leaves and stems before reaching the adult stage.

The primary economic damage is twofold. First, the extraction of sap causes general plant weakness. Second, the damage inflicted by the female’s ovipositor during egg deposition causes mechanical splitting of the bark. These wounds not only hinder nutrient transport but also serve as entry points for various bacterial and fungal pathogens, potentially leading to severe cankers.

Management of the brown-horned treehopper focuses on both mechanical and chemical control. To maintain orchard health, consider these measures:

• Pruning and destroying branches that show signs of egg-laying activity.
• Removing weeds near the tree base to minimize habitats.
• Applying targeted insecticides when nymphs are in their early stages of development.
• Regular orchard inspections to track population peaks and intervene before significant damage occurs.
