Description
The buffalo treehopper (Ceresa bubalus) is a notorious insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Membracidae. It is easily identified by its triangular shape and the two horn-like projections on its thorax, which give it a resemblance to a buffalo, combined with a protective green coloration that blends perfectly with foliage.
This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including apple, pear, peach, apricot, and various ornamental trees like willow and poplar. Young trees in nurseries and young orchards are particularly susceptible, as repeated damage can result in stunted growth, dieback of branches, and general failure to thrive.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with females laying eggs beneath the bark of young twigs in specialized incisions. Upon hatching in spring, the nymphs descend to the ground to feed on the sap of various weeds and grasses before returning to the trees as adults during the summer.
The primary damage is caused by the females during egg-laying. By making crescent-shaped slits in the bark with their sharp ovipositor, they create wounds that heal poorly and often lead to bark splitting, localized necrosis, and secondary infections by fungi or bacteria, which can cause long-term structural weakness in the affected branches.
Effective management focuses on disrupting the pest's environment and direct control when necessary. Cultural practices are paramount, specifically the systematic removal of succulent weeds in and around the orchard to deprive nymphs of their early food source. Additionally, pruning and burning heavily infested twigs during winter dormancy helps to significantly reduce the population for the following season.
