Cerotoma

Cerotoma is a genus of beetles belonging to the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae). The most prominent species within this group is the bean leaf beetle (Cerotoma trifurcata), which is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in North America, notorious for its ability to devastate legume crops.

These beetles primarily target legume crops, with soybeans being the most economically impacted host. Adults feed on the foliage, creating small circular holes that reduce the plant's leaf area. Meanwhile, the larval stage feeds underground, consuming root hairs and nitrogen-fixing root nodules, which is critical for the plant's health and yield potential.

The life cycle of Cerotoma typically involves one or two generations per year, depending on the climatic zone. They overwinter as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter or soil crevices. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed on emerging seedlings, eventually laying eggs in the soil around the host plant roots.

The economic impact of Cerotoma goes beyond direct tissue loss. Excessive feeding by adults can significantly retard seedling growth. Furthermore, the larval damage to root systems makes plants more susceptible to soil-borne pathogens. Additionally, these beetles are known vectors for several plant viruses, including the bean pod mottle virus, which can severely reduce seed quality and crop yield.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices like crop rotation and planting time adjustments help minimize initial infestations. Monitoring is crucial, and when scouting indicates that beetle populations have reached economic threshold levels, foliar insecticide applications are recommended to reduce adult pressure and prevent larval establishment.
