Description
The Puss moth (genus Cerura) belongs to the family Notodontidae within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are well-known for their camouflaged appearance, which mimics the texture and color of tree bark. The most common species, Cerura vinula, is a large moth with a wingspan of up to 80 mm, characterized by intricate grey and black markings on its wings.
These insects primarily target deciduous trees, with a strong preference for members of the Salicaceae and Betulaceae families. Common host plants include willow (Salix), poplar (Populus), and occasionally birch (Betula). In orchards and forestry environments, they can cause localized damage to young trees, affecting their vigor and growth rate.
The life cycle involves a complete metamorphosis. They overwinter as pupae enclosed in extremely tough, wood-reinforced silk cocoons attached to tree trunks. After emerging in the spring, the adults mate, and the females lay eggs on the leaves. The larvae are distinctively marked and possess a defensive "fork" on the posterior, which they use to ward off predators or parasitoids.
The damage caused by Cerura larvae is primarily defoliation. While young larvae may only skeletonize the leaves, mature larvae are voracious feeders that consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs or bare petioles. Severe outbreaks can lead to significant canopy loss, which stresses the host tree and makes it more susceptible to environmental stressors.
